I’m excited to share one of my favorite Spring rites with you: The Egg Ritual!

The egg is one of the most ancient and powerful symbols of life, fertility, and cosmic potential.

Long before it became associated with pastel baskets and Easter bunnies, the egg was revered in cultures around the world as a sacred vessel of transformation, healing, and creation.

In the season of Ostara—the spring goddess of dawn and renewal—the egg becomes a particularly potent magical tool for emotional healing and personal growth.

I’ve also included detailed egg ritual inspired by the goddess Ostara designed to help you plant the seeds of healing, release old wounds, and align with the energies of spring.

The Spiritual and Magical Symbolism of the Egg

Throughout time, the egg has appeared in myth, mysticism, and magic as a symbol of:

• Creation – the cosmic egg from which the universe is born (Orphic, Egyptian, Hindu traditions)

In the context of the goddess Ostara and the Spring Equinox, the egg represents rebirth, renewal, and the emergence of light after a long spiritual winter.

It mirrors the process of healing: we retreat within, nurture what is broken, and eventually emerge whole again.

Ostara and the Egg: A Sacred Union

Ostara, the Germanic goddess of spring, is strongly associated with the egg and the hare.

Folklore tells of Ostara turning a bird into a hare who could lay magical eggs—a mythic merging of light, fertility, and seasonal enchantment.

These sacred eggs were said to be brightly colored and gifted to humans as tokens of transformation and joy.

In modern witchcraft and nature-based spirituality, egg magic during Ostara is used for:

• Releasing old emotions
• Blessing new intentions
• Healing grief or heartache
• Fertility (of the body, mind, or spirit)
• Growth and creative energy

Ritual: Egg Magic for Healing and Growth

What You’ll Need:

• 1 whole raw egg, in shell (any color egg is fine)
• A small bowl of spring water or moon water
• A candle (pink, green, or white)
• Waterproof markers or paint for decorating the egg
• A quiet space (ideally outside or near a window)
• Optional: dried herbs or essential oils (rose, lavender, chamomile are good, but use what feels right)
• You’re going to bury your egg in the soil outside somewhere, so have a plan for where you’re going to do that.

Step 1: Create Your Sacred Space

Cleanse your space using smoke, sound, Reiki, or intention.

Light your candle. Sit quietly with your egg in your hands.

Close your eyes and take a few deep, grounding breaths.

Visualize the egg as a symbol of your inner self—whole, protective, yet full of latent power.

Invite the goddess Ostara or the spirit of spring to join you in your ritual.

Step 2: Infuse the Egg with Healing and Intent

Using your waterproof pen or paint, gently decorate the egg. Write or draw:

• Symbols of healing (hearts, spirals, runes)
• Words of intention (“growth,” “love,” “renewal”)

Gently anoint the egg with essential oil, saying something like:

“With this egg, I release what no longer serves me. With this egg, I plant the seed of healing and new life.”

Step 3: Water Blessing

Make sure the marker/paint on your egg is dry before you move on to this stage. (You don’t want your markings to run.)

Hold your bowl of water by your heart and say something like:

“Water of life, water of spring, carry my heart back to wholeness. May this egg be blessed and renewed.”

Sprinkle your egg with water, visualizing it being filled with light.

Step 4: Bury Your Egg

As a last step, bury your egg in the ground for growth and grounding.

• Bury the egg in the Earth beneath a tree, in a garden, or deep in a large potted plant (don’t use a small plant, the egg might get stinky as it breaks down).
• As you cover it, say something like: “As this egg returns to the Earth and nourishes and fertilizes the soil, so will my intentions for healing grow and flourish.”
• Ask the Earth to nurture your intention like a seed.

Other Ways to Use Eggs in Ritual

Painted Intention Eggs

• Blow out a few eggs clean to remove the egg white and yolk, so that you’re left with only the shell. Here’s how to do that.
• Paint your eggs with symbols, colors, and affirmations
• Place them on your altar as energetic “seeds” of what you wish to grow this season

Full Moon Egg Charge

• Leave an egg under the moonlight to charge with lunar energy
• Use it in rituals for emotional clarity or new beginnings

Golden Egg Ritual for Abundance

• Paint an egg with gold or green paint to symbolize growth, prosperity, and abundance

• “The light within me cannot be broken.”

Food Safety Note
I don’t think I need to say it, but here it is anyways: If you’re using store-bought eggs, don’t consume eggs that have been sitting out, unrefrigerated. (Ever wonder why freshly laid farm eggs are ok to leave out unrefrigerated? It’s because they’re NOT WASHED. In the U.S., eggs are power-washed and often bleached before sale to remove bacteria like salmonella. But this also removes the natural protective coating (called the bloom or cuticle). Without that barrier, bacteria can get in—so refrigeration is necessary to slow bacterial growth. The more you know! 🙂 )
