Leo’s ruler is the Sun, which means the real question isn’t how to shine, it’s what you’ve been keeping in the dark.
Every year around this time, my feed turns into the same five words on repeat: shine your light, bestie.
Post the thing. Wear the sequins to the grocery store.
Leo season, as far as the internet’s concerned, is basically a permission slip to be as loud as you want.
(I’m not against that, for the record. I have an amazing sequin dress.)
So when Leo season and the Lion’s Gate overlap (which they do, every year, since the Gate culminates on 8/8 right in the middle of Leo season) it’s easy to assume the Gate is just more of the same.
Extra sparkle. A cosmic megaphone. Turn the Leo dial up to eleven.
But…it’s not really that.
I covered the mechanics of the Gate itself (the Sirius alignment, the numerology of 8/8, what the ancients were tracking when they built monuments toward that patch of sky) in my main Lion’s Gate post.
What I want to get into today is narrower, and probably more useful: What Leo actually is, underneath the stereotype, and what the Portal is specifically asking of that energy.
The Only Sign Ruled By an Actual Star

Here’s something that gets glossed over. Every sign in the zodiac is ruled by a planet, except Leo. Leo is ruled by the Sun.
Not a planet reflecting the Sun’s light…the Sun itself. The source.
That’s not a small distinction.
Go deeper on Sun Symbolism: Ancient Meanings, Spiritual Power, and Solar Magic Through History
The Moon, Cancer’s ruler, shines because it’s bouncing someone else’s light around.
Most of the planets are the same story. Reflected light, which is essentially borrowed light.
The Sun doesn’t reflect anything.
It burns, and everything else gets to be visible because it happens to be nearby.
So when we talk about “Leo energy,” we’re not actually talking about a sign that wants attention.
We’re talking about the one part of the chart that generates its own light and can’t help being the reason everything else is visible.
That’s a different starting point than “main character energy,” which is the version that gets memed to death every August.
It’s also, not coincidentally, the sign that rules the physical heart in traditional medical astrology. That tracks. Courage doesn’t come from the Latin word for lion, like you’d expect. It comes from cor, which means “heart.”
To have courage originally meant to speak plainly from the heart, without armor.
Leo’s whole deal, underneath the performance culture it gets stereotyped into, is supposed to be exactly that. It’s all about undefended, heart-led self-expression. Not a show. A pulse.
Egyptian tradition actually gives Leo season a second lion, beyond the Sopdet/Sirius connection we already covered.
Sekhmet is the fierce, lion-headed healer and destroyer goddess all in one.
Her fire burns off what’s false and no longer serves. In the same motion, it heals whatever was underneath it.
Destruction and healing as one act, not two.
That’s a pretty good description of what real Leo energy does when it’s working correctly. It doesn’t perform. It burns clean.
More on Sekhmet soon, because she’s out of this world. I just completed my Sekhem healing certification with the amazing Juliette Bryant (I’ll be offering sessions once I more fully integrate the energy) .
Being Seen vs. Being Watched

So, shadow Leo and healthy Leo can look identical from the outside.
Both are magnetic. Both take up space. Both know how to hold a room.
The difference is underneath, and it’s this: One of them needs you watching, and one of them doesn’t.
Healthy, Sun-sourced Leo radiates because that’s simply what it does. Think of the way the actual sun doesn’t dim itself waiting to see if anyone’s looking up. Your attention is nice. But it’s not required. The light was happening either way.
Contrast that to shadow Leo, who performs.
And performance, unlike radiance, needs an audience to complete it. It’s a transaction, not an emission.
If nobody’s watching, shadow Leo doesn’t just feel unseen. It starts to feel like it doesn’t exist. That’s the tell.
When the need to be witnessed turns into something closer to panic, you’re not looking at confidence anymore.
You’re looking at a very old, very well-dressed fear of being ordinary. Or worse, of being overlooked entirely.
In nervous system terms, this maps cleanly onto something polyvagal theory has been pointing at for decades. And that’s performing, charming the room, keeping everyone watching.
That’s often a nervous system that doesn’t feel safe enough to just exist without managing people’s reactions to you.
Real radiance, the kind that doesn’t need applause, requires the opposite. Enough felt safety in your own skin that you’re not scanning the crowd while you do the thing.
There’s an old myth that gets at this better than any psychology paper does.
The Nemean lion, in the labors of Hercules, had a hide no weapon could pierce.
Hercules eventually killed it with his bare hands and wore the pelt afterward as armor. He literally wrapped the thing that used to threaten him around his own body for protection.
That’s shadow Leo in one image.
A defense built out of what once terrified you, worn so long you forget it’s armor and start thinking it’s your skin.
The work isn’t to rip the pelt off in front of everyone. It’s to notice you’re wearing it, and ask what you’re actually still defending against.
What the Lion’s Gate Portal Is Actually Asking

Ordinary Leo season (the four weeks between late July and late August), with no Sirius alignment required, asks something fairly generous of you.
Be creative. Take up space. Have fun. Let yourself be a little dramatic about it.
The Lion’s Gate is narrower time, but it’s not gentler. It’s not asking for more output. It’s checking the loop.
We talked about the numerology of 8/8 in my main piece on the Lion’s Gate Portal. The number 8 as an infinity symbol, doubled, a shape that folds back on itself.
I think that’s the real key to what the Lion’s Gate Portal wants from Leo energy specifically.
An infinity loop only works if it’s closed/completed.
If there’s a gap…if the front you’re showing doesn’t actually connect back to what’s true underneath it…then the loop doesn’t complete. It just leaks. You see what I mean?
That gap is exactly where the Lion’s Gate Portal applies pressure.
Not by making you shinier. By making the gap between the performance and the person more expensive to maintain.
Whatever you’ve been holding together through sheer charisma tends to get a lot harder to keep holding during this window.
People report old patterns cracking open, masks slipping, things they’d been performing suddenly costing more energy than they’re worth.
That’s not punishment. It’s just the Sun doing what the Sun does…illuminating.
It doesn’t ask permission to shine on something. It just does, and whatever’s been hiding in the dark gets harder to keep there, whether it’s ready or not.
What I’ve Been Hiding, Personally

I’ll go first, since I just asked you to think about it.
For very close to thirty years, my spiritual practice was almost entirely private.
If you’d asked me on a random Tuesday what I’d been doing that evening, the honest answer would’ve gotten me some genuinely concerned looks at a dinner party. Journeying, working with plant allies, running energy for someone three states away.
So mostly, I just didn’t say. Decades of real work, done almost entirely in the dark, on purpose.
Then this January happened.
I ended up in the ER with anemia that almost killed me. It was bad enough that I needed four blood transfusions. And at some point a doctor told me, more or less, that it was remarkable I was still walking around under my own power.
That kind of sentence rearranges you. You don’t get to keep hiding from your own life once you’ve come that close to losing it. The body just stops cooperating with the performance.
I also turn 50 this year (how the hell did that happen, lol?). It puts me squarely in the middle of my Chiron Return.
Your Chiron Return is the roughly fifty-year point where Chiron comes back around to sit exactly where it sat when you were born.
Chiron is the wounded healer, returning to the original wound, except this time with three decades of medicine and experience in your hands instead of none.
The invitation of a Chiron Return isn’t to hide the wound better. It’s to finally do something out loud with what it taught you. Which is, not coincidentally, an extremely Sun-ruled thing to be asked to do.
So that’s mine. Thirty years of practice kept private, a body that forced the issue, and a Lion’s Gate Portal that’s asking me to keep doing this (journeying, building Sanctuary, the writing, all of it) in daylight instead of after dark.
So, What’s Next for YOU?

Not of me. Of you.
If you feel called, try giving these a good think (or journaliing on them, etc.):
Where have you gotten good at performing something because it’s safer than being seen doing it badly, or honestly, or unfinished?
What are you still keeping in the dark that’s costing you more energy to hide than it would cost to just let someone see it?
And if nobody clapped (if the room stayed completely silent) would you still do the thing, or would you stop?
That last question is usually the one that tells you whether you’re looking at your radiance or your armor.
If this kind of shadow work is something you’d rather move through with support than just journal about alone, that’s a lot of what my Spirit Walking sessions are built for. Going in, on purpose, to look at exactly this kind of thing.
The Sun doesn’t negotiate with the dark. It just rises. The week of the Lion’s Gate Portal is a good time to do the same.

This post blends astrology, mythology, and my own lived experience — including a health crisis I went through earlier this year. It’s offered for reflection, not as advice of any kind, medical or otherwise. If you’re navigating your own health situation, please lean on your own doctors and care team — no amount of spiritual framing replaces that.
